Healthy Habits in Your 20’s

As a child, your parents take care of your health.  They make sure that you have regular checkups with the pediatrician, make sure you have all of your vaccinations, take care of your daily medications and take you to the Doctor when you are sick.  In middle age our health declines and there may be chronic health concerns that need to be addressed and in your old age, most people are on multiple medications to stay healthy and so they can have a good quality of life.  But what happens in your 20s?  Now is the time to be aware of your health, and in taking care of yourself now, you will be healthier in the long term.

As young adults, you need to be aware of your blood pressure.  It is important to have a healthy blood pressure because it can lower your risk for heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and vascular disease.  The best way to keep your blood pressure in check is to eat a healthy diet.  Along with this, it is important to keep your salt intake low, as excessive salt can increase blood pressure.

Young adults tend to feel invincible, and like to go out and eat and drink excessively.  It is important to drink in moderation, as this can also lead to high blood pressure and liver damage.  Getting a good night’s sleep is a great way to lessen stress and it can also help to keep your appetite in check.  It is easy to overeat when you are tired.  It is recommended to get 7-9 hours of sleep every night.  Eating a well-balanced diet is also important for long term health.  Most teens and young adults don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables.  Try to get at least 2-3 cups of fruits and vegetables per day.  Eating more fruits and vegetables can decrease the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.

Aim for 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week, and 2 strength training sessions per week.  Keeping an eye on your sugar intake can help you maintain a healthy BMI. Follow these guidelines and your long term health will benefit.  Start healthy habits early  and you will be sure to live an active lifestyle even as you age.
