Traveling with Medications

Summer is here and people are off to vacations.  Whether you are going to the beach, across the country, or abroad, you need to make sure you have your medications with you.  What is the best way to travel with your medications?  If you are flying to your destination, what are the rules?   If you are traveling abroad do you need documentation on your prescriptions?    And what should you have “on hand” just in case you need it?

The best way to store your medications when you are traveling is in a secure bag that can hold all your medications in one place.  It is a good idea to have one that locks if you are traveling with small children or on an airplane.  Several companies sell bags that have storage compartments for medication bottles, and even have locks.  SafeToteRx is one of those companies that even sell a bag that has a TSA approved lock that is perfect for airline travel.  This makes it easy for airport personnel to inspect your medications while still keeping them safeguarded.

Airlines have certain rules regarding medications.  You may bring your medications in pill or solid form in unlimited quantities as long as they are screened properly.  You may also bring necessary liquid medications on board in excess of 3.4 oz as long as you are willing to allow them to be thoroughly inspected and you inform security officers that you have liquid medications.   You may check or carry on medications, but it is recommended that you carry on your medications in case your luggage is lost, or you need the medication while you are on the flight.

Even if you are just traveling to the beach, it is a good idea to have a few pharmaceutical products on hand.  For example, pain relievers for kids and adults, band aids, and cold medications, in addition to your daily medications.  This way you won’t have to interrupt your vacation with a trip to the drug store.

If you are traveling abroad, it is a good idea to take documentation of your prescriptions with you, and also make sure that you have an extra supply of needed medications in case your trip is extended.   Follow these tips and you are sure to have a safe and healthy vacation!
